Yoram Kaniuk was an Israeli writer, journalist, theater critic, and one of the first Israelis to officially declare himself an atheist.

Over the course of his 83 years, Kaniuk not only left behind a vast literary legacy for future generations, but also broke tradition by openly declaring his atheism while still identifying as Jewish.
Born on May 2, 1930, in Tel Aviv, which was then part of Palestine, Kaniuk's father, Moshe Kaniuk, served as the personal secretary to Tel Aviv's first mayor, Meir Dizengoff.
After Dizengoff's wife passed away, he entrusted his home to the city, with the intention of turning it into an art museum. Moshe Kaniuk became the museum's first director, and together with his son, they took care of the exhibition and interior of the museum.
