Roy Campanella was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1921. He was the son of an Italian immigrant father and an African American mother.

As a teenager, Campanella showed a remarkable talent for baseball and quickly rose through the ranks of the Negro Leagues. In 1946, he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and became the team's starting catcher.
