August Losch and Central Place System: K-Value of Losch!
August Losch thesis, Economics of Location, first published in 1939, deals with the problem of the location of economic regions.
He used the same hexagonal lattices for his theoretical landscape that were used by Christaller. He emphasized like Christaller, that raw materials were to be equally dispersed over a flat plain. But differences would emerge as postulated by Losch “owing to the forces of concentration brought to play by the possibility of specialization and of the operation of economies of scale”.

The idea of a hierarchy of settlements in which some settlements provide specialized functions for others, the simple triangular lattice pattern has to be disturbed. Losch thus developed a form of more sophisticated economic landscape by rearranging and superimposing the various hexagonal systems.
