The Swedish engraver of Polish birth, Czeslaw Slania, passed away on 17th March 2005. In the course of his long and active working life he achieved to become the most productive stamp engraver in the world so far.
He produced no less than 1,070 different stamps for totally 32 stamp-emitting countries and territories before laying down his indispensable tools, the burin and the magnifying glass, shortly before his death.
On the occasion of his 60th birthday in 1981 Czeslaw Slania engraved this self-portrait.
What does an engraver do?
The task of a stamp engraver is to transform a drawing - usually elaborated in eight times the size of the final stamp - into an engraving which then forms the basis of preparation of a forme (plate or cylinder) with many identical reproductions with which an almost infinite number of identical stamps can be printed.
The engraving is performed laterally reversed thr
